spring 2005 focus on... reflective numeracy practice
three people doing math
Many practitioners don’t feel confident teaching numeracy. Some had negative experiences learning math, some don’t feel they know how to approach it, others wonder how numeracy is different from math. In this issue of Literacies we opened up discussion about numeracy practice. We were delighted to include a range of practitioner reflections. Some describe how their practice reflects their philosophy. Some outline what they have learned from students. Others share what has worked, and how they know it works. All have considered, and tried, new approaches. The articles were a starting point. Our web forum was a place to talk about our experiences of numeracy work. We explored questions such as:
  • What makes it hard to teach numeracy?
  • How does your philosophy affect how you approach numeracy?
  • What are your issues, dilemmas and questions about numeracy teaching?
  • What excites you about numeracy work?
The discussion started on Monday, June 6th and ended on Friday, June 24th.
